January is recognized as Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to education, prevention, and action. At Drive Away Cancers (DAC), this month holds deep meaning as we continue our mission to raise awareness, support survivors, and help drive cancers out of our communities — one swing, one voice, and one action at a time.
Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable cancers when detected early. Yet, too many lives are still impacted due to lack of awareness, access, or routine screening.
That’s why awareness is not optional — it’s essential.
Understanding Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer begins in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. The majority of cervical cancer cases are caused by persistent infection with high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV) — a common virus that often shows no symptoms.
Most HPV infections clear on their own, but when they don’t, they can lead to abnormal cell changes that may progress to cervical cancer if left undetected.
Why Awareness Matters to DAC
At Drive Away Cancers, we believe knowledge saves lives. Many women with early-stage cervical cancer experience no symptoms, which makes routine screening critical. Awareness empowers individuals to:
Prioritize preventive care
Break stigma around women’s health
Advocate for early detection
Support those impacted by cancer
By starting conversations and sharing accurate information, we help create a future where cervical cancer is detected early — or prevented entirely.
Prevention Is Powerful
Cervical cancer prevention is possible through proven, accessible measures:
1. Regular Screening
Routine screening can detect precancerous changes early, when treatment is most effective.
Pap tests identify abnormal cervical cells
HPV tests detect high-risk virus strains
DAC encourages women to speak with their healthcare providers about the screening schedule that’s right for them.
2. HPV Vaccination
The HPV vaccine is a powerful tool in cancer prevention. It protects against the most common cancer-causing HPV types and is recommended for:
Preteens and teens
Young adults
Some adults after consulting a healthcare provider
Vaccination today helps protect future generations.
3. Education & Advocacy
Education fuels prevention. When communities are informed, they are empowered to make proactive health decisions and advocate for accessible care.
Standing With Survivors
January is also a time to honor cervical cancer survivors, fighters, caregivers, and loved ones. At DAC, we stand in solidarity with every individual impacted by cancer and recognize the strength it takes to face diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.
Support can take many forms:
Sharing survivor stories
Offering encouragement
Supporting organizations that provide patient resources and research
